Focus on what hotel brands you like to stay at. Upgrade status can be achieved by pretty much any hotel with with their credit card. With free award nights I like doubling up on cards so I know that at a minimum each year they will give me a weekend trip. The best point value and big spender program is Hyatt.

Hilton - best free night rewards can be used at any property
Marriot - two tiers of credit card rewards
IGH - great cheap fourth night free option
